Maryborough is unashamedly proud of its heritage – and rightly so. Situated on the Mary River, it was one of Australia’s largest and busiest ports in the late 1800s.
The once thriving wharves are long gone and in their place is an exceptional heritage precinct called Portside – with sensational parklands, museums, restaurants, art gallery, historic pubs, steam train rides and river cruises.
At one end of Portside is the magnificent Brolga Theatre, a world-class venue, host to national and international artists. Book-ending the precinct is the historic marina. Two magnificent riverside parklands – Queens Park botanic gardens and the Mary River Parklands – connect the Brolga to the marina and provide a natural avenue into the stunning colonial streetscapes of Wharf and Richmond streets.
Maryborough is where the world's most beloved story about Mary Poppins had its early beginnings. P.L. Travers, author of Mary Poppins, was born in Maryborough and the city embraces this unique
connection in a number of ways - including a statue in her honour.
With such a rich past, it’s no wonder that Maryborough offers visitors the chance to explore an impressive 10 museums and historic collections.
But Maryborough is not just about history. It is a city of great natural beauty, defined by the Mary River which winds and bends her way around its reaches.
Maryborough has a packed events calendar including the World’s Greatest Pub Crawl and the world’s only Mary Poppins Festival week.
It has a lively, growing restaurant and café scene with a range of dining options from boutique coffee shops to alfresco dining by the river. Antique galleries, unique art, gift and jewellery stores, stylish boutiques and major retail outlets and a famous weekly market guarantee great shopping in Maryborough.
Impressive parks and sporting facilities and a wealth of community groups ensure there is no shortage of entertainment, leisure or social opportunities.
